The Artisan Program

For parents in Haiti, surrendering a child to an orphanage often is a life and death decision. Because many families simply cannot provide the food, shelter and medical care their children need, they must give them up to give them a chance at life.

Chances for Children Artisan Programs, Ila Joi and Zel, help keep Haiti’s families together. As part of our unique training* programs, men and women learn to create either beautiful, handmade medical scrubs or one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry made from recycled cardboard. The money they earn means they can provide for their families, promoting self-reliance and building self-esteem. Ultimately, these artisans are making a sustainable income allowing them to keep their children.

55% percent of the proceeds from every sale go directly to the artisan, 15% of their sales are put into the artisan's savings account, and 30% is needed to go back into the supplies to create their future products.

When you purchase a product from a Chances for Children artisan, you create a future for Haiti’s families.

*Ila Joi artisans are trained by the skilled staff of The Apparent Project.
