Family Profile

Chances for Children is looking for qualified adoptive families.

The Bad News: Unfortunately, the Haitian adoption requirements for adoptive families are very restrictive.

In order to adopt a child under the age of 5 years an adoptive family is required to:

  1. have at least one parent be between the ages of 35 and 50. The younger parent must be at least 30. 
  2. if married, the couple has to have been married for at least 10 years. Single women over 35 years of age with strong references may also adopt.
  3. must not have biological children.

The Good News: Though it is preferred that adoptive families meet the requirements above, there are some exceptions for families who are willing to be a little more patient during their adoption process. Families that do not meet one of the requirements may still qualify to adopt with the understanding that they will need a Presidential Dispensation for their adoption (meaning the President of Haiti has to approve the adoption). This is believed to add a few more months to the 12-18 month adoption process once a file is in process in Haiti. Still, it provides more flexibility for families who are dedicated to adopting from Haiti but do not meet all requirements.
