As of March 27, there are 8 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Haiti. However, many people believe this number is higher because most Haitians do not have access to medical care and cannot get tested. In their neighboring country, the Dominican Republic, 581 cases have been reported. There are 64 ventilators and 124 intensive care beds in all of Haiti. All of our American staff are now back in the U.S. until further notice. Our Haitian staff is not coming to work unless it is for an essential job (nannies, nurses at creche, creche staff and facilities people) The medical clinic is only open for creche children at this time. Partners in Health is estimating a 30% mortality rate in Haiti due to it being difficult for the Haitian population to “social distance”, lack of healthcare and weakened immune systems.
